Usually what rattles in a catalytic is not in it but on it. Most catalytic converters have a metal heat shield which rusts and rattles before it eventually falls off. It's put there to keep grass and leaves from catching fire if say you park on a grassy field, etc. Any reasonable mechanic can fix this easily and inexpensively. Like I said before, it will eventually fall off, but it may drive you crazy before then.

The rattle is caused by a loose baffle. The weld gives way after a period of time. most cases it is caused by condensation from the engine that forms rust.
Purchase a new Converter.Make sure there are small weep holes drilled in the bottom of the box to let condensation to escape.
This situtation happens in cold weather eg Winter.

Sometimes it's the metal shield on the outside of them but as of late it's broken honeycomb substrate inside the cat (Pellets are almost never used anymore on Fords.. all I ever saw was honeycomb on the inside for last 10+ years)

Platinum? I think there are platinum pellets in there. The pellets allow for more surface area so more catalytic converting can go on.

there are pellets, which is the substance that react chemically with the exhaust, inside the casing that move about freely that cause the noise you hear. there has to be space for the exhaust to flow thru.

Take the converter off, get the broken pieces of that honeycomb stuff out, and put the converter back on. (good enough until you can get a new one).
