If it is to be in the house, you will have a lot of problems with the GP..they shed incessantly, and are bred to bark every few minutes during the night (to warn wolves that a big dog is on duty)
Australian shepherd also sheds a lot, but its easier to control..I have had both breeds..
GP is better with kids, and makes the ideal nanny dog..
both are extremely intelligent, and easily trained..Neither of mine wanted to be indoors much, as they prefered to be on duty outside..But the GP was most adamant about this.
check out these great dogs. I hope they are in your area> http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi

I have had both and both are wonderful dogs. Out of the 2, as for a pet, I would go with the Australian Shepherd. Truthfully a pyrennes is not really happy unless it has a herd of goats, sheep, cattle to watch.

I have owned both. My Great Pyrenees died several years back. So sweet of a dog. Low energy dogs. Are happy just sitting around. Steady dogs. They do get really big, though. Friendly. Australian Shepherds are very high energy dogs that need alot of attention and exercise. Loyal to one person mostly. Aloof to strangers. Need to be with their owners and not left outside. Fun to play with and extremely smart.
Now, have I confused you even more?

Ann's answer is good advise. Great Pyrennes are guard dogs, they are usually paired with a heding dog as a team. Ranchers raise pups with flock and some working dogs never socialize with people. However they are also good pets but it takes work. If you get one suggest going to off leash dog park couple of times a week. Good Luck.

Pyreenes are giant herd GUARDING breed that are fairly laid back and moderate energy.

Aussies are a mdeium size herding breed that are quite energetic.

Both websites are the respective breed's National Breed CLub - the only one recognized and accredited by the AKC.

Both sites have all kinds of infor about thebreed plus brreders' list and links to breed rescue.

They tell you everything about the breed but were afraid to ask.

Too bad you couldn't get one of each, huh? Both are pretty good-sized dogs, so if you have kids, you might need the one that's gentler with kids.

Good luck - I'm sure you will love the dog you choose. : )
