The side of my thumb where it meets nail is very sore and hurts extremely bad if I touch it against anything. I can see a very small spot of green. I have soaked my thumb in warm saltwater and put neosporin on it....Will this help or will I have to go to the doctor and have them remove it ultimately? (Ouch!)

Give it a few days to heal. It might just be a small infection. If it gets worse or does not heal, see your doctor.

First soak in BROWN Vinegar-since vinegar is known to kill Fungus,Mold,Bacteria and was used way back by the Romans to fight and prevent infection in wounds. ou can soak a bandage and wind around thumb area and then secure with bandage(dry)over it . Since you have to do this several times for can't just leave thumb in the vinegar soaking for vinegar is acidic can just soak bangage on the thumb since painful to touch and check once a day to see if getting better-unless something entered the flesh in that area like a very small thorn or pin or anything then it will keep it infected but even for that the vinegar will keep the infection down for kills bacteria. If it is not better in a week or is visibly getting worse than you must go see a MD-I doubt they will amputate thumb or remove nail. but will determine what the green spot is since that seems to be the cause. Did you recently hit thumb or freeze(do you do anything with liquid nitrogen?)Gangrene is usually black Hope nothing serious and it gets better soon

Sounds like an infection; you probably should contact your primary care provider soon, because you may need antibiotics.

In the meantime, salt water soaks----as hot as you can stand them---may help, and the neosporin certainly won't hurt.

But do follow up, ok?

Maybe you can dip it in peroxide (its going to burn!) morning and night for a few days, followed by neosporin and see what happens after a few days. If it doesn't look better, then see the doc.
