Son, I don't know about now, but when 'Nam was on, a guy could steal a car in the south and have the judge give him a choice between prison and volunteering for the services. Considering we don't have the death penalty for car theft, more than a few picked prison.

It depends upon the charge, but generally the answer is no. Some crimes, even at the misdemeanor level prevent service in the military, like misdemeanor domestic violence. A link to the soldier's guide is below, look under Lautenberg amendment.
Other crimes are at the discretion of the recruiting commander. For example, drugs are a no go, but getting convicted of trying to pass off a fake id will not prevent military service, but will prevent service in a job requiring a security clearance (so those guys would be cooks or mechanics).
Hope that helps.

I know joining the army used to be an option for criminals. Whether or not they let these kinds of people in now, I don't think so. I know the Air Force does not allow people with a felony in the service.

Any and all sex offense are automatic disqualifications if convicted. However, if this person was not convicted, his case could be reviewed for an exception. I don't know any commanding officer willing to sign off on a sex offense.

Sometimes you can but it is very hard. It also depends on how bad the charge was.
