We may never know. Poodles were once used as retrievers in water and it gives them the ability to float. Their fur does not absorb water easily.

Simple that is the way they are, they would not be poodles with straight fur. My poodle was the best dog I had, she lived to be 16 and had a stroke, that was 7 months ago and I still cry sometimes. They are lovely dogs.

If you want a dog with regular fur, get a different kind of dog. Their puffy fur is part of what makes them unique.
