If the popping is coming from the intake then it is probably lean, fuel filter, fuel pump, ect. if the popping is coming from the exhaust then it is rich or misfiring. It could also indicate that a lifter or cam lobe is failing, you can check this by removing the valve covers and see the movement of each . You need to check timing tune up and vacuum. it takes time and effort but can be tracked down.

Try unplugging the Mass Air Flow sensor and driving it and see if the popping goes away. If this makes the popping improve, you need a Mass Air Flow sensor. Have it diagnosed by a repair shop, it could also be a fuel problem or base engine concern.

Sounds like the timing is off. If this is the case, fuel in one or more of the cylinders isn't combusting and the fuel is expelled to the exhaust where the hot gasses ignite the fuel. Take it to a mechanic to check the timing.

It could be a couple of things. Your MAF (mass airflow sensor) may be dirty or in need of replacement. You may have clogged EGR passages (a commonly needed service on those particular models). Is it PINGING? If so, try using a higher octane fuel and/or disconnecting the shorting bar that's underhood on the left hand inner fender apron. Hope this helps.

YOUR TIMING IS OFF. YOU SHOULD HAVE A MECHANIC LOOK AT IT UNLESS YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW HAS THE KNOWLEDGE TO FIX IT.
