I am trying to keep my family healthy. And I want to make sure I am feeding them a healthy diet. Of course, with my husbands consent. (so no I am not picking on him and I am not saying he is fat) But I want him to be a healthy weight. So I have his body fat percentage.

What is the ideal body fat percenatge for him? And what other things should I keep in mind while cooking and preparing healthy meals?

Generally, 14-17% body fat is considered "fit" for men & 17-25% acceptable. For women, based on anatomical architecture, the acceptable percentages are higher.

In addition to body fat, the body mass index can be a good indicator of fitness & health. Links to sites which explain both can be found below.

To keep in mind while cooking: use less oil & salt, eat a wide variety of fruits & vegetables, not just meat & rice or potatoes. The best thing to do is follow the new "food pyramid", which is slightly different for everyone based on age & amount of exercise daily. You can find it at http://www.mypyramid.gov/ .

I hope this helps.

The only time I was even conscious of the issue of percentage of body fat was when I was an avid, and I DO MEAN AVID, bicycle racer and long distance rider. Men would shoot for an "ideal" percent body fat of around 12%, and women around 20-24%. But then, that's when I was decades younger and a whole lot more athletic, so, "ideal" is different in different situations. I would just recomment fresh vegetables and fruits with some protein an essential part of the diet, and no red meats and minimal dairy products. This "recommendation" is as old as time itself, so it's surely been said a million times before, but it's a proven diet. Exactly how you introduce that into your family diet is up to you all. I would recommend that if you're going to put your husband on a diet like that, you put yourself on a healthy diet as well, and exercise is a MUST in your dietary regimen. With as little information as you provided about you and yours, that's about the sum-total that I feel safe in recommending. God Bless you.

Just make sure there's tons of salad prepared in the fridge. If he sees it that will be the first thng he'll grab.

It's a great trick to make men eat more fresh greens.

His body fat should ideally be below 18%, but under 25% would be acceptable. HTH : )

I think moderation is the key to health. We know how often "they" change their mind about what is good for you. Just keep the fresh fruits and veggies high on the list.
