are sunbeds actually a key to catching skin cancer or what?

ive heard different rumours, i know most people blame sunbeds when they have caught skin cancer, but i am sure i saw something once where scientists have not proven that there is a direct link between cancer & sunbeds (therefore can't prove) only speculate.

ive been going on them 2 times a week since i was 19, i'm 25 now :/

all responed to some points here....

1) "whats a man doing on a sunbed" wheres the law saying man shouldn't? :/ everyone looks better with a tan.

2) tanning creams, yeah tryed them - they are good but expenisive.

3) other points, smoking is defaintly proven to cause cancer...yet a family member has smoked all his life (71 years old now) and had no health problems due to smoking,

sunbeds (specualtion), therefore is not a sceintific fact as far as i'm aware.

don't worry sunbeds is something that i am not ALWAYS going to use, i just do it while i'm still young - looking my best for the weekends.

Just the risk of getting skin cancer should stop you from going to sun beds, one thing they do for sure is age your skin prematurely. Cause wrinkles, early liver spots, and the hide of a cow. Lets just put two and two together, Too much UV light from sun can cause skin cancer, you get the same UV light from sun beds, so what does that tell you. I suppose it's the same sort of thing as pumping radio waves into your brain for hours a day with mobile phones, there is evidence but no direct link to brain tumors, but people still buy them for their 10 year old kids, cooking with teflon coated pans has carcenogenic links, but people still cook with them. Those will be the things people whine about in the future after smoking is banned and air pollution is under control.

There is increasing evidence that sunbeds/tanning beds will cause cancer, the same as actual sunlight. There is adequate research on line for you to review; try a search of medical sites, such as Web MD, Mayo clinic, or the National Institutes of Health.
There also has been documented evidence for years that increased light exposure from sunbeds or natural light will cause the skin to become leathery and wrinkled. You may want to give this some thought...you won't be 25 for ever!! ;-)

Well i use sunbeds everyday and have done since i was 16 I'm 23 now. The thought of being white absolutely terrifies me. Sunbeds like any other form of UV rays can cause skin cancer.
Cancer is often associated with smoking and sunbeds but i know people who have died of cancer and have never smoked or used a sunbed in there life so it just shows that you can get cancer regardless of what you do.

sunbeds do contribute to wrinkles. as to skin cancer, you are right, it's only a speculation. but is that not enough evidence that there is a posibility for skin cancer due to tanning beds? the uv rays are damaging to your skin, natural or artificial. it does not make sense why wou would subject yourself to such a discipline of attending it twice a week for the last 6 years, unless you are involved in an industry that requires it. i think tanning creams are a much better option.

I have always loved a good tan and i grew up in the sun worshiping days. But now they are saying tanning beds and to much sun causes cancer. I try to use plenty of sunscreen and stay away from tanning beds besides i have the wrinkles to prove i was a sun worshiper. A tan is not worth the wrinkles honey believe me .

Why one earth do you want a tan. They so old fashiond and parsai, sundbeds give u the same u.v. as the sun, the only diference, is the sun is natural, and usualy in a nice place, but no one sits in it, with any sense, it used to be a working class thingy, OOOOO I can aford to go abroad, get a tan, impress the neighbours on the council estate, that I can afford to go to a sunny country, usually the stupid costa del sol, full of underclass prats, browning their under nutritional bodies, in shell suits, and having a pint with a big fat fry up ,,,yummmy yummy. Get skin cancer, most of an educated clever people keep out of it. If you are white. Why would you need to be black. you are so shallow, and yes, you will get skin cancer, for your ignorance. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE BROWN FOR. IF YOU ARE A WHITE ENGLISH WOMAN...YOU ARE WIERD, AND ALSO IGNORANT.

You can get damage to your cells that would lead to skin cancer from a tanning bed, the same as you would get from the sun.
