and it sometimes stops on its own and other times I have to bang the tv to make it stop. What the heck is wrong with it?

It's a samsung 15 inch screen. Picture quality is very good. I think I've had it about 5 yrs+

this particular set has a defective capacitor in the power supply circuit. it is not expensive at all, matter of fact the part is less than 5 dollars, but if left untreated, the power supply could completly fail and cause a total loss.
have this replaced ASAP.

I had an old T.V. that did this, and the picture would also get small and fuzzy. If I remember correctly, something was wrong with the tube. But I can't swear to it. I don't really know all that much about T.V.s. Usually, when they start giving me too many problems, I just throw them out and buy new T.V.s.
