Yes there is. There is a hormone in your body called cortisol, that is secreted during stressful situations. Anything from car accidents to small things like missing a meal, not getting enough sleep and fighting with someone, getting cut off in traffic. Cortisol's job is to break down muscle mass into sugar so you have instant energy to "fight or flight" Kill the Lion or run away. But we dont fight, and we don't run. We SIT. we sit in an office and are worried about money, our jobs, our relationships. Scary movies, missing meals...then we fight with our loved ones in bed. Sitting. Not doing anything. Not running away or using energy. Not using the sugars in our blood. So what does our body do? When you don't use the sugar, your insulin goes up, and stores it all as fat particularily around your abdomen. Same thing goes with eating sugar. There is TOO much in your blood (because we are ONLY supposed to have sugar in the form of fruit...NOT cookies and white flour!) If there is too much sugar in your blood, your insulin goes up and you store it as fat. Eventually you will be overweight and the perfect candidate to getting diabetes. Ways to lower stress? Meditation, yoga, SLEEPING BEFORE 10pm every single night. Not eating sugar. Eating clean and drinking water. Exercising also lowers cortisol in your body...remember...you FIGHT OR FLIGHT. If you are stressed, get on the treadmill and burn that cortisol away. There are herbs you can take too, Relora and Holy Basil being a few of them.

Hypothyroid can cause weight gain. So many Americans are overweight these days. Many children are also overweight because they eat the meal their parents are preparing with oils and fatty flavorings. Many people feel like they have to be full and uncomfortable before they leave the table. Bad habits to include overeating and couch potatoe lifestyles is a huge cause for the tight belts we see in plenty.

Genetics, personal history and economy.
Genetics will establish your metabolism.
Personal history:
eat everything on your plate and you do
eat only 3 meals a day, even if you aren't hungry
drinking soda-pop(one of the very worst things you can do for controlling your weight)
eat on the run-in your car, at your desk, etc.
...many other old wives tales, including not drinking enough water
Economy-it costs more to eat healthy.
If you are serious about controlling your weight it takes DIET-not dieting-eating more of the correct things, EXCERISE and ATTITUDE.

Being overweight can be genetic, some people I know hardly eat a thing yet they are still over weight, why? Because their parents are over weight, it's all in the genes.
(Mind you, these people are old enough to decided for themselves what they can/can't eat. That is, no fatty foods, more fruits & vegies yet they are still the same size they were last year).

As we get older it becomes harder to maintain a healthy weight. I have also read recent studies that show that too little sleep can make you gain weight.
