Some good reasons? I think you hit the biggest nail on the head by putting this question under SAFETY. I am amazed more kids don't end up dead while being behind the wheel than what do. At 16, kids still lack the respect for others and other peoples property. How often do you see a high schooler actually doing the speed limit... how about in a residential area? Not very many....

I was certainly no better when I was that age. Looking back at some of the asinine things I did behind the wheel, I wonder how my butt is not 6 ft under!

I am 18 and live in South Africa. Here you may get your learners lisence from 17 and drivers from 18. I also volunteer on an ambulance every other weekend that I have time.
My biggest fear is having to pick up one of my friends.
When you are 16 you have probably just started partying and its great fun. Even as an 18 year old I know before I started to see accidents that I would'n't have been too phased by how much a driver had had to drink before I got in the car. As a 16 year old even less. I know I am becoming more responsible. Watching a young guy (about 21) sit in his seat unharmed but drunk out of his mind, and looking to the other car where a child's body is being pulled from the wreckage is my reason for saying 16 year olds should not be allowed to drive. It is scary. I am not saying all 16 year olds are irresponsible, just that most have not had a life experience to shock them into being responsible yet. My opinion is harsh but I do think that 18 is a small improvement on 16.

They could make sure learner or young drivers only drive a certain size engine car and this'll help stop the boy racers or kids from loosing control of a car they can't handle.... Plus also adding more restriction just like NZ does....

I live in New Zealand and kids can drive over here at 15.... However they have to take 3 different tests to pass their licence....

New Zealand operates a graduated driver licence scheme for new and learner drivers, which was introduced in 1987. It is a three stage licensing system, with three main driving restrictions: night-time curfew; passenger restrictions; and a low alcohol limit, as well as speed of 70kph. Since it was introduced there has been a significant reduction in the number of young people involved in serious motor vehicle crashes. While reduced driving by young people may have contributed to this reduction, there is also evidence that at least part of this reduction may be attributed to the graduated licence driving restrictions, especially the night-time curfew....

So I feel that 18 would be better if they keep the current rules for driving unless they make it safer for them by implimenting rules and regulations for them.... However you'll also find that much older people out there driving are crap at driving so stating to increase the age just because they're young might not be the answer, what age would he sensible....

Why punish those that are capable just because the minority might give them a bad name.... They're so many sensible youngsters out there that can drive, like someone else said peer pressure is a cause of a lot of accidents....

But look at other drivers and how they drive, I bet you'll find they're well over 16, 18 and possibly 20.....

There are none. My little brother just turned 16 and past the drivers test with flying colors. If these people are passing 16 y/o's then they are obviously ok to drive. The proper question is: "What are some good tactics to reduce bad driving among SOME of the 16/17 y/o's that drive porely?" The only thing I could think of is to find some way to reduce peer pressure. They intice one another to race. Most of the time there are more than one in a car when they are driving crazy. They obviously know how to drive correctly because they passed their tests. Maybe another question would be "At what age should a persons license be taken away permanently?" There are more elderly caused accidents were Im from then people my age.

Driving requires quick and decisive decisions. A typical 16 year old is simply not capable of making the right decisions on most things in life, especially driving !!! It only comes with maturity.

it should be increased or driving tests should be more picky.. im only 16 and i'm even saying this.. my friends are jerks on the road and barely pay attention and ALL of them had gotten into accidents and NONE of them have even had their licenses for a year yet..

until a test can prove that you can drive and pay attention (maybe extend the permit to a year like florida does) then the kid should be mature enough to get his or her license

I think car accidents are the leading cause of death for a person 16-18.

i used to sit on my dad's lap and drive when I was 5. I agree that young people can't drive worth a ****, but we were all there, and we got to start at some point. 16 is a fair age.
