My daschund gets into the trash when I am gone sometimes. I have not caught him in the act, but he knows when he gets into the garbage he is in trouble. How can I train him to leave it be?

Best thing to do is to get a crate. It might sound mean at first, but dogs find this comforting...it's their safe place. It also keeps them safe when you aren't at home. I saw a small dog brought into our office (I work at a vet) who was out when his parents weren't home. He was playing and somehow managed to break a heavy vase... he was cut badly and almost didn't make it due to loss of blood. If you must leave your dog out, get a trash can with a lock on it. I use a 20 gallon dog food storage container for a can...you can find them at Target for A LOT less than a regular garbage can.

We have Chihuahuas. We keep our small trash can put up out of reach because they will get into it if we allow them to do so. Anything smaller than a kitchen sized garbage can should be kept out of reach or your dog will continue to ranscak the trash.

I had a roommate once who had a Pug. He would get into the trash every time we left the house. My dog, a Lhasa Apso, knew full well that was a No No!! When we would walk in the door, my dog, Barkley, would be way down on the other end of the house, hiding...and her Pug? Right in the middle of it!! The two of them also got into their Christmas present that year while we were gone out shopping!! They were both guilty of that one! We finally just started sitting the trash can up a bar stool every time we went out. Problem solved, but we took the easy way out!!

Go down to your local pet store and buy some bad tasting spray to put on the trash for a while until he looses interest. Either that, or put the trash up on the counter when you are away.

Would putting the trash up on the counter be a viable solution? Otherwise, consider taking the trash out with you when you leave for the day. Be sure your dog has his own chew toy to gnaw on while you're gone so he's less likely to be searching for something to chew on. (Be sure your shoes are put away... all that yummy leather might be too much for your dog to resist.)

Put your trash somewhere that he can't get to when you are gone. Dachshunds are very smart dogs and know when, where and how to do most anything so you have to out-smart them in a way. I put my trash in the pantry and close the door and my dog hasn't yet figured out how to open the door so it seems to be working.

Either move the trash can or spray hot pepper mixed with water on the trash can. Boil several hot, hot peppers in water, put the water you boiled the peppers in a spray bottle and spray the trash can with the pepper water. Cayenne peppers, or habernero peppers are best. Be careful and wash your hands after.
Also, you can buy Bitter Apples and spray on the trash can. Can be purchased at Petco, Petsmart and other pet stores nationwide.

Sorry, but dogs dig and dogs eat. The only way to get the dog to stop is to get a secure lid garbage can. I have a stainless steel one that cost about $50.00. It looks nice, keeps out garbage smell, and most important keeps my dogs out of the trash.

Put the trash can up on the counter or in an out of the way place like a hall closet or broom closet. Worked for my mother.
