Well, I wouldn't go that far. Atheism is a negation of a belief, not a positive set of beliefs itself.
It would be more accurate to say:
"... Atheists are taught that people can be good or bad.
... Atheists do not place responsibility for their actions on a diety, (however this does not imply they take responsibility -- there are a lot of other things you can blame actions on)
... Some (not all) Atheists rely on common sense."
It's important to remember that a strict commitment to rationality will lead to atheism, but that the reverse is NOT true. A strict commitment to atheism does not make a person rational. In fact, if god decided to show up and start revealing themself in a very measurable and verifiable sort of way, a commitment to atheism at that point would be IRrational.
It's always important not to frame the debate as atheism vs religion... it's rationality vs irrationality. If there were rational evidence for god, I would believe.

Some Christians are more than capable of reading and comprehending the scripture and at the same time using our intellect to see the true meaning that may perhaps be lost in the archaic language. I was not taught I was born bad. Jesus died on the cross so that the burden of original sin was no more. Yes God will forgive me for what I do but I must first show that I have taken responsibility for it with an honest heart and really mean that I know I did wrong. There are a few sins that are simply abominations. And I believe that God looks not only at the sin but the soul of the person who commits the sin. murder is a sin but there is gray area between killing in self defense, killing out of duty, and just plain being a psycho who has no moral boundaries to stop them from their own perverseness. God does have the final say in who has done good and who has done wrong. But common sense as you describe it, compels me to believe that God looks not just at black and white issue of sin but mitigating cicumstances and such.

Interesting, but I don't bite. Sorry. Same answer as before. According to your theorem, I am a closet Atheist, since I was, as a Christian, never taught that I was born bad, and indeed, we can all be good, or bad, as free will dictates. I was taught that God will forgive me if I am truly sorry for what I've done/not done, but there is a punishment for all sin. (ergo, I must be responsible for my actions), And I was taught that there are minor sins and greater sins (mortal and venial). It's only common sense. Sorry. Your assumption that you're better than me because you're an atheist and I'm not just fell through. But then, nobody's perfect. It must still be bothering you.

How can atheists have a higher standard of behaviour than Christians, when your belief is devoid of gratitude?. You are thankless and ungrateful to a Creator who gave you a borrowed life. Tell me, don't you have a navel?. Didn't you have a mother and a father? Did you come to this world at your own will? Did you give yourself life through a test tube?. Did you just pop out of the ground? Hey, you can't even control your own heartbeat. (You better believe your heart is your ISP with the almighty Creator. You cannot run and you cannot hide.) You can't even rest it at your own will when you go to sleep.
Can you defy the law of gravity by levitating for at least 30 seconds? Can you make time stand still? And revert it back even for a few seconds?. Excuse me but you are just another passenger on planet Earth, and God is the captain and the navigator. And you cannot tell Him that He does not exist. Or you are in big trouble man. You cannot say you do not have intelligence to discern what is right or what is wrong.
You were born for a specific purpose and reason. You did not come by accident. You better believe this.
If you have a child who is ungrateful, after all you have done for him or her, what will you do?Reward him or her?
You better think deep about this. You better believe you are just a mortal person. Don't ever think you are invincible because you are not. You are susceptible to pain and misery. You could also be dead at any time without any warning. Don't ever get caught with your pants down!

Give me a break.
Christians are taught from the Scriptures that everyone is born with a sinful nature, this nature has to be taught how to share, etc. because we are born selfish, duh. Watch babies and little children sometime.
We are taught to take responsibility for our actions, and ask the Lord to forgive us when we do something wrong. We usually have to go back and make it right somehow.
Christians are taught that all sin is bad, and we need to re-learn how to live and behave to change behaviors so that we don't keep doing the same things wrong.
We are also taught that God is love, and He is, and we have hope, what do you have?

How many hospitals do you know of that are named after atheists? What is the atheist equivalent of the Red Cross? Salvation Army? When disasters strike, who are the people that respond to the need? Is it the atheists? or the christians? Who believes in the true worth of the human soul? That God the Creator so valued the souls of men that He would voluntarily subject Himself to their wickedness and degradation and suffer an excruciating death on a cross so that they might not have to face the just penalties for their immeasurable wickedness? And who is more wicked than the person that is vainly puffed up in their mind that they are wiser than saints and prophets and Jesus Christ Himself?

I was raised a Catholic and I am now an atheist. I don't think there's a lower standard of behaviour on either side - both sides just rationalize morality in different ways.

As a group, Atheists do not have a defined standard of behaviour. There is no universal uber law for them to appeal to. Thus, all atheistic standards are relative to the individual.
Your question is based on a faulty assumption (well, several actually, but this is the most glaring one).

I think Christians have a lower standard of behavior than Athesists, I mean if JC was living today would he want people to discriminate and relate material wealth to spiritual superiority?
