I always put a little water in with a roast when I do it in my slow cooker, maybe not quite as much as when I cook it in my oven or roaster. For a roast add a little salt and pepper, maybe some onion and put it on low, let it cook about 7-8 hours. I love my slow cooker and use it alot in the winter. It's almost impossible to ruin anything in it. Have fun!

Yes, like 1/2 a cup. Remember, the slow-cooker makes the juices come out of whatever is in there, so you need about 1/2 of the norm. Throw some spices, cut up raw veggies, carrot, potatoes, and an onion. Cook on low for about 6 hours and it will be oh so good. Have fun!

Usually a slow cooker does not require water. It cooks verrrry slowly and creates steam. You'll be surprised how much liquid is in the pot after the roast is done, merely from the juices and steam.
Some recipes call for a very small amount of liquid, along with other ingredients in order to make a sauce. But rarely is water called for to cook a simple roast or chicken.

When I have used my slow cooker, I put the meat on the bottom and the vegetables on top of meat then I add my water but not so much that is over flows. After it has been cooking a long while, I move the vegetables around.

SUNDAY SLOW COOKER ROAST
Sm. to med. chuck or shoulder beef roast
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can French onion soup
1/2 can water (to clean out soup can)
Dash of pepper
I like to brown roast by searing each side in a fry pan with a little oil (but not necessary). Place meat in slow cooker first - then soups, rinse cans with water. Set on low, slow cook all night to have for lunch - or all day to have for supper. Remove meat - check your gravy, if too thin - add 1-2 teaspoons cornstarch with 1/4 cup cold water (mixed). Set cooker on high - stir into thicken and enjoy.
BEEF COOKED IN SLOW COOKER
1 roast, about 3 lbs.
1 can Golden mushroom soup
1 pkg. dry onion soup mix
1 can water (can use 2 cans)
Cook in slow cooker for 8 hours, or until done. When done, mix liquid with cornstarch or flour to thicken. Can serve with noodles or rice.

Ok...so here's what I do!! Spray or grease your cooker first, add your roast, and season generously....I like beef bouillion granules, onion and garlic powder, and pepper....oh and maybe a little rosemary!! Put potatoes and carrots on top, and put the cover on!! Let cook on low heat for at least 6 hours!! No water!! The roast will cook in it's own juices!! I have found water makes the meat chewy....not tough per say....but chewy!! Good luck!!

No you dont have to put water in it. The natural juices will be enough for it and the vegetables you add as well.
Tip
The longer you cook something the more tender it is. You can cook almost anything in a slow cooker, just be sure to add spices to your liking.

You can put in a small amount of water in the slow cooker, add in your vegies and cut up a onion and green pepper too. Let it all cook in the cooker and when it is done, dinner is ready, and it is a one pan clean up.
