If we were all sitting in a room together, do you think some would still have the audacity to make such rude comments... face to face? Or is it possible this may offer the protection needed to take on such a cowardly approach to opposing views?

I would say that you are very observant. I don't believe any of us would behave as rudely as we sometimes do in this forum. I agree with you, and feel that you are correct.

I don't think this type of forum has anything to do with whether or not someone is rude.

Religion is a topic that by nature of ones beliefs can get ugly. If a person feels attacked or their beliefs are attacked, they can get rude sometime without realizing it. Same thing with people who are fed up with people forcing their beliefs on them. Tempers just rise under certain situations.

Be glad everyone is not in the same room, The cops might get called. I have sat in church and watched a man go down the aisle and grab another man and punch him right in church service.

I have seen and heard of violence in AA meetings also.

Religion and spirituality is just a hot topic.

It's not the forums fault. Some people just act rude when they can hide behind a computer screen.

In some ways, it's good that we can speak freely in here and try to end ignorance through questions/answers. On the other hand, you're right, people are cowardly when they insult others on here.

I´ve come from yahoo.enespanol and I can tell you down there is the same thing... this forum lets people express about God or atheism with such rudeness that I never would´nt expect from any of us... is strange...speaking about God and being so rude?
And I agree with you on your last question...it offers protection to be cruel and agresive with our opponents... thing that I don´t understand either.

Some might have the audacity to make rude comments face to face and some might not. I think it would depend on their mood at the time. Also, seeing a person's face or experiencing their demeanor might influence how a person responds to another's question. Without a face I believe it is easier to attack or mock another.

I find it utterly amazing that questions are directed to certain people and some answer, who have either no clue or just want to go against the questions.
Example:
"Christians, what would you think if Jesus did xxxxxxx?"
The answers by some people would include,
"You're brainwashed."
"Jesus wouldn't, because he didn't exist."
"Why would you want to believe in such xxxx.

These types of people claim free speech but show their ignorance in the process. If they know nothing about the subject or just want to ridicule have no morals or class of character.

Undoubtedly, unless the subject is too general, someone would definitely stand up and scream bloody murder in offense or pure stupid.

I would still be honest in my opinions and views but on the whole respond in an amiable manner face to face.

Ive still managed to say things in a rude way at times though without thinking, but people who know you accept it as part of your personality anyway. I'm more careful with people i know personally than i am with strangers on the Internet though.

It sure does!! And I do think there would be a good bunch of them that would do it in a room with others too! Should hear my workplace! But yes, people get braver when they can't be seen, even I am! But I try not to be rude, just voiceing my opinions, it's sad but people are getting more and more rude and insensitive!

The forum promotes rudeness simply by virtue of the content being debated. That said, I would not say anything here that i would not tell someone to their face.I am capable of tact and I am also quite capable of getting in your face if the situation required it.

I don't know if I would say it PROMOTES rudeness. The majority of the people on here are really pretty great. Of course, whenever you have a situation where people can comment anonymously, you're going to get your share of people who are going to be rude to amuse themselves. And of course, the majority of THEM would never have the guts to say those types of things if they were face-to-face with people!

It isn't the forum that promotes rudeness, it's the anonymity of it. There are people who delight in being as rude, vulgar, insulting as they can possibly be. After all, it's easy to do it on the internet, no fear of being smacked in the face.
