hey everyone. the head gasket for my 1994 toyota camry xle blew this weekend (real fun stuff as I was driving 4 hours from college to surprise my ma on her 50th bday).

How much am I looking at to repair it? Should I go to a toyota dealer or private mechanic?

Thanks.

I'm in southern Oregon. So if anyone happens to be from the Grants pass area...that is where my car is anyway.

if u go to a dealer u are looking at at least $75 an hour just to look at the problem plus most if not all the parts being marked up. Ask your friends if they know a reliable private mechanic and find out what his rates are . The big difference is going to be how can you wait if you can rate it may be money ahead to go with the private. if not it could be faster but more $ at a dealer

You are looking at at least 1400.00 and go to a private mechanic as the dealer uses dealer parts and triples the price on them even if they are after market parts, and the labor rate well you will pay majorly for the dealer 65.00 and up per hour the private mechanic about 45.00 per hour. Good luck.....consider a new vehicle??~~~~~

get a private mechanic. it's a hell of a job and a dealership will put you in the poor house fast for the repair. If you were in my area I know someone that needs the work and is reasonable.

Private mechanic. Dealers charge and arm and a leg to fix your car.

private mechanic is usually cheaper...your lookin at about $150 maby a little more just for the head gasket itself...find a good mechanic that maby one of your friends knows and he might give you a good deal on putting it in...good luck

mostly there right, private mechanic but unless you need a new head you shouldnt have to spend over 500 bucks depending on labor rate in your area. you will need a new timing belt and make sure all the fluids are changed and it wouldnt hurt to have a tune up. but i repeat, replace the timing belt........
