The background for this Question is :

Well known Indian Muslim Human Right Activist, writer, and English Theater actress - Ms. Shabana Azmi, condemning recent attacks on Indian Muslim Women by Muslim youths who beat up Muslim Women who did not wear the head to toe "veil" called the "burqa", where some ladies suffered acid being thrown on them and one had her nose cut off, said that Islam did not require Muslim women to cover themselves in this fashion and opined that the attackers should be punished to the fullest extent of the Law. Decrying the incidents, she said that Islam could not condone such vicious acts and the claim of the arrested assailants of "religious activism" was untenable.

Interestingly, the Indian Bar of Advocates, including their Muslim Chapter, has refused to these people as well as two recently arrested Pakistani Terrorists, preferring "Contempt of court" for rejecting the appointment.

However, in a surprising turn of events, the Imam of Delhi and many Muslim Clerics have condemned Ms Azmi saying that Chapters 18 and 22 of the Koran clearly states that all Muslim Women must and should wear the "burqa".

Declaring her a non-believer, the Imam has exhorted all Muslims to ostracize her and has said she does not have the right to stay a Human Rights Activist as she is no longer considered a "True Believer"

Interestingly, however, the Human Rights Commission and many Muslim women have extended their support to Ms. Azmi.

A Gallup Poll held recently has shown that as much as 98% of the Muslim Respondents were against the imposition of the "Burqa"

there is no burkha at all in Islam. we only have the Hijab -- to cover the privates. Burkha is the innovation of cultures asnd socities. a woman is allowed to wear a free-flowing dress so that her body doesnt provocate others other than the one she marries--- it is the SAME FOR MEN TOO.

in Islam both men and women should have a Hijab -- to cover their bodies with clothes and their head. one doesnt need a burkha to cover themselves -- all one has to do is to wear clothes are not provocative.

An-Noor | 64 verses | The Light سورة النور
Sura #24 | Madina
30 Tell the believing MEN to LOWER THE GAZE and BE MODEST. That is purer for them. Lo! Allah is aware of what they do.
31 And tell the believing WOMEN to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to their own husbands or fathers or husbands' fathers, or their sons or their husbands' sons, or their brothers or their brothers' sons or sisters' sons, or their women, or their slaves, or male attendants who lack vigour, or children who know naught of women's nakedness.

as far as Hijab for women is concerned -- heard of a place called Tuareg?. it is a country with predominant muslims. but here the WOMEN DONT cover their face inspite of wearing the Hijab -- but to add to most people's shock it is the MEN who from childhood cover their face with Niqab.

I am not Muslim and can not comment on their laws, but I have seen lots of pictures of Muslim countries where none of the women were wearing those head to toe veils.
They have a lot of very fine looking women too. ( I just thought that was worth mentioning for some odd reason).

Edit to your details; If 98% of the population and the Women are going to support her those hairy old goatsucking Imams are going to lose and get turned out of office, muslim men are no different than the rest of us when it comes to standing up to a determined wife. Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets!

I am a Muslim Woman and I DO NOT wear a Burqua, and I am a 100% bonafide, certified Muslim Woman..That is a terrible story about those women beging attacked for not wearing a Burqua. Too much attention is placed on Muslim Women for how they dress, when its nobody's business what we wear. Our bodies belong to us--period...The Koran tells women to cover their bodies when they walk outside so they wont be harrassed, but covering in a head to toe veil is not a requirement of the Koran, and it is not a pillar of Islam.

False , but they do all have to cover the hair, wear the hijab.

The burqa is only for some countries, like afghanistan.

As far as the story, well, you know how those people are...

Religion of peace!!!

in islam..it's a must to cover certain parts of your body with proper attire-clothes.

it's a sign of worshipness to god.

u dont have to cover all parts u know .. and in any fashion can...not specifically by wearing "burqa".

as a muslim please accept the law of islam as it is what your god want you to be...u will be paid back in heaven ..insyaallah...remember that we only live here (world) temporarily...this is all a test of loyalty from god.

for all u worshippers outhere..be patient and use a wiser action to uphold the law...do not be too emotional.

pray to god and be calm in your actions.
