Hey, I'm Brandon. I am 16, and I have been looking into differn't possibilities for a career. I have always loved my country(America), and have had a strong sense of patrioticism since I was young. So I have been considering joining the Marines'. But I'm not really sure how to go about it... My Dad says I should get a degree first. Because if you get your B.A. before enlisting, you automatically become a O-1(2nd LT), is this true? If yes, what is the best way to go about qualifing to become an officer? Are there pre-enlistment courses I can take? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Richard: You are a damn fool. I am not going to join the Marines' to fight for "Major Corporations". I am joining to fight for my Country, my Family, and my Flag. I can't believe that you are this arrogant. That you would oppose, and disrespect the brave men and women of our Military. Please get a fully developed brain, or have an adult help you when answering questions.

George: Thanks for the tip on West Point. But isn't a West Point degree only applicable to Military occupations? Also, I noticed it kept saying you will apon gradutaion, be commissioned as a 2nd LT in the Army. Do they have courses for Marines as well?

TJ and BluePrairies: I'm a little confused... To take the PLC and OCS, do I need to have a BA? Or is it a course you take instead of College, or West Point to qualify for a officers position? Or is it something you take during college? Also, do the PLC and OCS courses qualify you for officer positions?

Thanks again for your help and your time.

Your dad is absolutely correct. Get that degree and then if you want to joint the marines, go for it. If you find the marines are not for you, you can always fsll back on that degree and it will mean a lot in your future career.

The decision to become a Marine is not to be taken lightly, that was the first thing my recuriter said when i walked into his office, if you enlist you start as an E-1 in boot, which is 13 weeks long, it will be hard as hell, you will be a changed person, it will be the best decision you will ever make. to become an officer you can take the route that i am goin, called PLC (platoon leadership course) its during you first 3 years in college and its the most common way to become a commissoned officer. You can not be deployed or be required to ware a uniform during the school year and during OCS you wll be paird E-5 Sgt...it takes alot of guts but if you have will you can do it!

Your father is only partially correct. You can apply for the officer candidate program with a BA but there's no guarantee that you'll a) be accepted and b) graduate with a commission.

There are two academic feeder programs for Marine officers, one is Navy ROTC (Marine option) and the other is PLC (Platoon Leader's Course). If you live near a University with an ROTC program you might want to talk to some of the cadets (please note that ROTC graduates STILL have to go through Marine OCS their third summer).

Keep out of trouble, get excellent grades, round up some good references and get yourself into first-class physical condition.

If I was 16 like you and feel that way I would join the Marines. But if you really would like to join the US Military professionally, can I suggest you try West Point or any other prestigious military institution that will make you an officer once you completed the course. I don't know the requirements and you can check it out it the following website:

Good luck and I salute you!

Dont!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you can't find a job in your
country, then why? would you fight for evil people that sold all are
jobs out to China. It does not make sense to protect a elite group
of corporate crooks. You are not fighting for Freedom of the people.
If we were attacked Bush-Cheney would be sitting in there Bunker
as the rest of us died. You think they would care? Hell no!!!!!!!!!
