I watched one of those medical emergency room shows one time and the doctor told the girl to push down on the top of her head right above the forehead....I don't know if this works, I don't usually get hiccups.
You can also try drinking a glass of water with your head hanging upside down. My mom swears this works.

I'm a RN and taught Nursing for over 20 years. If you are having recurrent episodes of hiccups there is a definite medical cause. Forget about all the quick and easy remedies as I'm sure you tried most of them already and obviously they didn't work for you. You definitely need to be examined by your physician to rule out possible causes, make a diagnosis, and prescribe medication. The cause of the hiccups is pressure on the phrenic nerve , a motor nerve to the diaphragm. In Latin, phrenic comes from phrenicus meaning diaphragm. The most common medication given for this condition is Largactil/Chlorpromazine, a Psychotropic medication that seems to alleviate the hiccups atleast temporarily depending on what is affecting the phrenic nerve. There are different kinds of muscle relaxants and some such as Baclofen can be quite helpful after Largactil stops working. Also Tincture of Pepperment drops taken orally in milk can be helpful too. As a last resort, a Phrenicectomy surgical procedure may be done but this is quite a complex surgery. The causes vary considerably but a common culprit is ulcers . I can only emphasize the importance of making a medical referral to assess and treat recurrent hiccups effectively. I had a family member who had hiccups 24 hours a day and I got ahold of all the medical advice I could from some excellent specialists to try to manage this problem. Good luck to you.

A lot of medications can cause this and if that's the case only stopping the med will end your sorrow. There are a few drugs out there for stopping hiccups, but are reserved for chronic cases because of their side effects. Sadly (and truthfully) the only scientifically proven way get rid of good old fashioned hiccups is by melting a teaspoonful of sugar on your tongue. Don't chew it or swallow it, just let it dissolve and go down your throat on its own. I won't describe the mechanism it works but it journals and on MythBusters, tis is the only proven way. It tastes better than getting scared too...

chronic hiccups can be caused by a number of things most are innocus but there are a few problems that can be caused by having had recent surgery, liver problems or muscle pulls.

Thorazine is used to try and interrupt the cycle to allow the muscles to relax as well as flexeral. If you have a chronic/persistant problem you need to see your physician.

This sounds really weird but it works, now remember you have to follow every single step or else it will not work, ok. Here we go:
1) get a glass of water
2) hold your breath for 10 full seconds
3) release your breath and before you take any breath you must take 10 small sips of water
4) now breath and voila your hiccups are gone!

I don't know why or what....but I used to have hiccups for days on end! I feel your pain!

What works for me....get a small amount of water, lukewarm...a bout 2 or 3 ounces.

Get a regular kitchen match, with the red stuff on the end that fires. Strike the match, drop it in the water, drink quickly while holding your breath.

They tell me sulfur (?) does the trick. I'm not a chemist, nor do I pretend to understand why it works, but it does for me.

good luck!

Oops! Forgot to tell you...DO NOT SWALLOW the match!

Hi Cat

Here you go

Cause
This is generally caused by overloading food or drink into the stomach. Relaxation is the most important thing.

Herbal Aids
1.General Instructions: Often hiccoughs can be stopped merely be bending over with the head downward and tipping a glass of liquid to drink it while upside-down. A few drops of antispasmodic tincture taken internally and rubbed on the chest area will often bring relief, as will a teaspoon of onion juice, a cayenne poultice on the chest area, black cohosh tea, blue cohosh, or wild carrot flowers or seeds.

2.Orange Juice: Take a good swallow of freshly-squeezed orange juice. Repeat after a few minutes if needed. Dill tea should help. Do a good acupressure treatment on the hands or feet.

3.Dr. Christopher's B & B Tincture: Black cohosh, blue cohosh, blue vervain, skullcap, and lobelia. This is used to aid in nervous conditions, sore throat, hiccups, and aid to restoring malfunctioning motor nerves and assisting in adjusting poor equilibrium and hearing, and a great blessing to epileptics. Massage into the medulla (base of skull), and upper cervicals, and do following: With an eye dropper insert into each ear at night four to six drops of oil of garlic and four to six drops of the following herb tincture: blue cohosh, black cohosh, blue vervain, skullcap, and lobelia, [B&B Tincture] plugging ears overnight with cotton, six days a week, four to six months, or as needed. On the seventh day, flush ears with a small ear syringe using warm apple cider vinegar and distilled water half and half. Take six to ten drops in a little water or juice two or three times a day.

4.Spearmint: A distilled water of spearmint will relieve hiccough.

Best of health to you

Cheers

There are so many ways to get rid of them, but have you tried holding your breath and drinking a glass of water?
Hiccups are spasms of the diphragm... perhaps you eat too fast.

You eat to much junk food, soda and crap, this stuff makes carbon gas in your stomach, to much bread, chemicals and drugs. Take a pinch of baking soda and put it in a little bit of spring water and drink it, this will neutralize the carbon gas and walla your hiccups should be gone instantly. The human diet should be 90% fruit.

Drink a glass of water upside down. In other words, pour a glass of water, bend over, and drink it from the side of the glass farthest away from you.

As to why you keep getting them, that's a question for a doctor.
