Fist off, talk to your therapist about it. That's what she's there for.

When you want to cut, try snapping a rubber band against your wrist, squeezing ice cubes, or drawing on yourself with a red marker. You could even buy some of that fake blood for halloween (wait until Wednesday and you can get it on sale), and squeeze it on yourself. Those are all substitutes for one or another part of cutting.

Also, when you want to cut, find something to distract yourself. Watch TV, read a book, go for a walk, write, draw, stand on your head... whatever takes your mind of cutting. Try this list for more suggestions: http://www.recoveryourlife.com/Forum/default.aspx?f=5&m=84887

Finally, I recommend you check out this website: http://www.recoveryourlife.com/Forum/default.aspx
It's kind of an online support group for people who are dealing with self harm. The people there are really supportive, and I'm sure they'll have lots more suggestions for you that what I just listed here.

Every time you want to cut, try to delay it. If you can wait five minutes, go for it. Or else distract yourself with something else to help.

If the urge is weak enough, you'll be able to overcome it completely and won't need to cut that time at all.

Eventually, if you keep at it, you should be able to change your thought patterns so that you want to cut less and less; you'll find some other way of fulfilling whatever need that cutting is fulfilling now.

Find out why; then find another way to do the same thing without doing something as socially unacceptable, painful, and (to some extent) dangerous as cutting.

Stay safe.

I'm also a cutter, I'm in DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy) and it's been helping some. Nothing is going to work overnight, trust me. I've been cutting for 7 years and been in therapy for it for 5. You should check into DBT, it is a lot of hard work though!

Dialectical behavioral therapy is really helpful for this. Ask your therapist if he/she is familiar with this; if not, you may want to consult someone who is.

Tell your therapist as openly and honestly as you can about this and why you like it. They can help develop a plan to help you stop.
