my grandson is 8, his father had nothing to do with him for the first 6 years, now he wants to change his last name to his. This has all started since my daughter is trying to get the $15,000.00 child support he owes. They live in iowa. is this possible or does anyone have ideas on what she needs to do now.

Simple.. stay out of their problems and let them do what they want.

If the father has legal rights to the child he can attempt to have the child's name changed, but there is a number of legal battles that will be fought to do so. Get an attorney. They fight best amongst each other, don't try to do this yourself.

the court will probably change his name, I suggest that she ask the judge to make it her last name and his hyphenated, that is what I did, and although it is a horribly long name, at least he has them both and when he turns 18 he can shorten it to whichever he chooses if he chooses and the important documents will already have his name on them.
