In the popular religions, god appeasement is relative. It is not necessarily how well you go, but how well you go in relation to other people. Point out that all us heathens are going to hell, for example, and you elevate yourself higher by comparison.
Yod, in His infinite Wisdom, replicates this nature by allowing people to downvote other answerers in order to improve the standing of one's own. It might not be a very good answer, but at least it's better than those infidels over THERE
