well you can do quite a bit with that amt of money. Wish I had that much to spend on my best guy friend!
I would say a Cabelas Gift Card! taht way he can pick out what he needs and you dont have to worry about him not liking something and needing to return it.
One year I made a knot blanket (do you know what they are?) that has camo on the one side. he loves it! he still mentions it! I also have found some really nice hunting tees, sweatshirts and such online.

my initial answer is knife but 600-1000 is quite a bit to spend on a knife, even a custom piece.

A nice set of binoculars, a spotting scope, some fancy reloading equiptment.

Find out his needs and type of hunting he likes. A top grade rainsuit is always needed, maybe a GPS. So mant great items that every hunter would love to have. Wish it was me you were buying for. LOL

Gift certificate is the safest bet...although $600 worth of not-cold-in-the-woods-anymore cloths would be an awesome gift!

I believe that life membership with the NRA goes for around $750. Definitely worth the price and one of the most thoughtful gifts you could give. Also it will keep giving for life

You can always use a good flashlight, a GOOD flashlight but not one of the LED lights, I have never liked them for tracking and hunting although they are good around the house.
