FROM WHAT YOU DESCRIBE, IT SOUNDS LIKE THE PROBLEM TOOTH IS A THIRD MOLAR (WISDOM) TOOTH. THE PAIN IS MOST PROBABLE AN UPPER ONE. TAKING IBUPROFEN FOR THE PAIN WILL HELP. BE SURE TO SEE A DENTIST A.S.A.P.

Definately go to a dentist. Tooth pain often radiates to the ear. A dentist can tell you what the problem is... a doctor would just send him to the dentist.

he could be cutting another molar. some people have extra. it could feel like a cyst but might just be really late wisdom teeth. most people don't get the second set anymore, because of evolutionary things, but some people still get extra molars. once the tooth is in it won't hurt anymore if there is space in his jaw. if there is no space, a dentist trip will be unavoidable.

I suggest you go to a Dental School at a University close to your home. Unlike common belief, dental schools are the best place to get treatment. Often times, the prices are less than half of outside practice. You will be surrounded by specialists who are there to teach their students. They enjoy challenging cases. You don't even have to pay for different specialists because it is all included.

However, you need to have patience with this because things will take longer than private practice simply due to fact that these are teaching facilities. This is your trade off. Good luck.
