not so much....the wine will still oxidize and start to taste crappy. If not sealed, it will continue sucking in the oxygen and oxidizing. Best to put the cork in it. Better yet, get a bottle of wine preserver. It is compressed inert gases (argon/nitrogen) that you squirt in the bottle to displace the oxygen before putting the cork in. They are around $15 I think, but last forever.
Even better than that...drink the bottle once you open it!
Cheers!

Your best bet is to buy one of those little pressure seal mechanisms. They're only a couple of bucks. You simply slide it into the mouth of the bottle and pull down a lever and it pressure seals the mouth closed.
However, if it's a sparkling wine, you can put a spoon in the mouth of the bottle. Leave the arm of the spoon dangling down inside the neck and have the plate of the spoon sitting across the mouth. So long as the spoon keeps swinging, the wine will stay fresh. However, this is only a temporary measure, but if you're having a dinner party or something and you don't want to have to keep sealing and re-sealing your bottles, you can use the spoon trick. Sounds odd, I know, but it's a tried and true method that works great.

I would suggest using a plastic wrap and securing it with a rubber band. This will seal out air better and prevent spilling too. I would drink the remaining bottle as soon as possible. Not many wines keep well for more than a couple of days after opening.
I always keep the corks from my empty bottles so I always have a spare. Once they are completely dry, they fit back into the bottle fairly easy.

Wine contains acid and it reacts to the foil which is a metal, so I would not recommend using foil by any means.
The best container for opened wines is called "stomach" Cheers.

The last time I was in that situation, though quite a while ago, I covered a bottle of wine with a small piece of plastic wrap and secured it with a rubber band.

It's best to finish the whole bottle of wine after opening it.
