The USA is an anomaly among civilised countries. The New World was the country of choice when the religiously-persecuted of Europe wanted to escape the wrath of a violent Catholic Church. Example - the Amish or Pennsylvania Deutsch (not Dutch, as they were of German origin).
Christianity or all of its sub sects IS the dominant religion in the US - look up the demographics - and is added to with every legal or illegal alien coming in from Mexico, Cuba or any other Lati-American country which was colonised by the Spaniards many years ago and thus bringing their strong Catholic beliefs, however misguided that may be, with them.
In Europe, religion is very rapidly falling out of general favour, except for those parts which surround the Mediterranean Sea, which are strongly catholic or Greek Orthodox, a sub-sect of Catholicism.
When a census is taken, either in the US or in the UK, and the question is asked "What religion are you", very many people automatically answer 'Christian' or 'Catholic' or whatever it happens to be, even if they are really non-believers. Many atheists either don't realise that they are atheists or don't have the self-confidence to answer truthfully. Thus, statistics are screwed.
If you are interested in a LONG outline of what religion is all about, or at least the views of one atheist who speaks for a lot of us, try www.noreligion.ca
The belief in creationism is held by those who cannot accept reality and who have been indoctrinated as children into believing what they have been told by adults, who, they assume at that age, wouldn't lie to them - would they? It must be true? No - a collection of falsehoods and for a specific reason. I don't need to explain that to you, do I?
Do have a better than average day.

Believing in a scientific theory such as evolution has nothing to do with the belief in God.
God reveals, man observes. This mean that according to the bible God existed before and created all we can observe. If you want to know God, you have his word as spoken by the prophets. You can believe or not believe in God. Your beliefs are yours.
Evolution is a scientific theory that explains facts. Facts are observations by men (note plural) independent of location. There are no facts about God since God exist beyond and inside of what we can observe. We do not come to know God by observations.
Numbers are not important. If no one believes in God, the word of God is there. And if you believe in God, then there is one more person who does. Belief in God is not a popularity contest.
Don't get confused with scientific theory that accounts for facts. Often when new facts come, the theory changes.
This is not true about revelation. We have documented the word of the prophets within its pages. It is there for all to read and the pages, the words, the characters are same no matter what man observes.

Most Americans definetly believe in God. That does not mean that most Americans take the literal word of the bible as the explanation for scientific phenomena.
Add to that, the fact that most Americans are not participating in Yahoo Answers. This is not the kind of forum to take any kind of poll to test national opinion. The sample is "less than" random.

In 2004, 4% of Americans believed there was no God.
In 2006, 10% of Americans believed there was no God. The stats are increasing.
But just because someone likes the theory of evolution doesn't mean they don't believe in God.

I believe that 'MOST' Americans do believe in God and many studies have been done that show this to be true. Asking a small sample of people "Do you believe in God?" does not produce a statistically viable answer

I believe in God, but I also believe in evolution. I see no contradiction, though I reject the Bible.
And people do not believe in atheism because "they can do what they want" (this in reply to an answer above). People believe in atheism because they can find no justification for belief in religion. From what I can see right now, more atheists are moral than many Christians (look at Foley).

You could believe in God and not believe in any religion. Then, you could believe in evolution and in God.
You could also be catholic and therefore, believe in God and again, also believe in evolution.
People that goes about interpreting the bible by the words, instead of saying these stories are symbols meant for us to interpret wisely and understand the profound message.
In this case, one would not believe in Adam and Eve but on the essence of the story behind it. They would still be religious.
Landmark of extremist from all religion always interpret strictly the lectures without considering that the message might be where we have to learn from instead of reading this like a the federal law or a state Statute.

Most of the people in america if you ask them would say they believe in God. Most of them are not devout believers and don't try to practice their faith, go to church, love their neighbor, they just believe God exists as a random person who they only go to when they have a problem and ignore the rest of the time. But of course there are also a lot of people here who are atheists, but I think if you asked them, more would say they believe in God.

It's not only Americans but all people. Think of what killing over 100 million people in the name of God has done. It has started the downfall of religion. Everyone heard the cockpit voice recordings of the 9/11 hijackers who said. "We are doing this for God". Did God show up for the masses? Mr. Bin Laden will be despised by all religions for what he started and now can't stop. The demise of religion.

I believe in God, but most kids these days go to public school, and they can't mention God, plus they get taught evolution as a fact, so that's what most people grow up thinking, even if they get taught otherwise at home.
