People lie down, but things are laid down. (Think of a hen laying an egg). It can get more precise than that, but - like the difference between who and whom - almost no one cares any more, and because languages are constantly changing, these distinctions are being lost. So don't worry about how long you have lain on the couch - people will only look at you funny.

P.S. Alright is alwrong. The only acceptable form is ALL RIGHT. (We want to make this match with ALREADY, meaning so soon, and ALL READY, meaning prepared...but there is no match. Sorry. All right?)

Lay - you put something in a location
Also: laying, laid

Lie - something you do to yourself
