The best exercise is a chinup! Even if you can only do one, that's fine, do one, have a rest and then do another, build it up and then try to do 2, 3 4 in one go, you will soon get there, it's amazing how your body can respond if you give it the stimulus.

But, assuming you struggle to do even one, then you need to make it easier.

Stand on a bench or move the bar downwards so that you can keep you feet on the floor, that makes it easy, right? Now repeat this by try to let you body 'hang' more each time and take the weight off your feet. You will soon be able to take your feet completely off the floor.

Another option is to use the pull down machine at the gym, grip the bar shoulder width or narrower just like you would for a chinup and pull straight down to the top of your chest. Increase the weights each time and then have another go on the chinup bar.

Good luck!

The muscles that are used in the chin up are the back/lats and biceps. push ups will not help you do a chin up. marine dude doesnt know what he is talking about. no tricep involved.

since the chin up is a body weight exercise, the less you weigh the easier it is to do chin ups. do rows with a cable machine, dumbells, or barbells. curls wont hurt either
