In many States the minimum age to buy tobacco is 18 (that includes getting cigarettes for free, but family members are excluded) and the minimum age to smoke is 16. The idea is that, between 16 and 18, your parents need to buy them for you.

In every state of the US, it is illegal for someone under the age of 18 to purchase or possess tobacco products.
