The size of dog doesn't affect the heat cycle. Females are generally in season for 21 - 28 days, depending on the individual, with only a few of those days being the actual fertile portion. Somewhere in the heat cycle, usually in the second to third week, the blood coloring will lighten up to almost opaque. Sometimes owners mistakenly think that because they no longer see red drops, the female is out of season. WRONG! She is now at her most fertile stage of the heat cycle.
During the fertile stage, the vulva will also swell up, growing to twice or even three times its normal size. An experienced stud dog will go crazy during this stage, as he knows the female will now be receptive to him.
It is up to you to keep the dogs seperated, by two fences/gates/doors. The female behind one fence, the dog behind another. Dogs have been known to breed through a fence.
You can get products at the pet supply store that will help alleviate the scent of the female to the dog. Products you can feed the female to reduce her scent or stuff you can apply to the nose of the dog to make it harder for him to smell her.
Exercise the heck out of the BC, take him for long runs to tire him out. And keep the pair seperated, or you will have some very strange looking pups! :-)

This is a very good question and you will have your work cut out for yourself. Any dog of any size will have a heat cycle that will last a total of twenty days. The first ten days are the mensis (bleeding) and the last ten are the days when she can be bred. The earlier in the last ten days are when she is the most fertile and then tapers off as the days go by.So one would breed on the tenth day and again one the twelfth. You always breed every-
other day. They're safe together only for six days then you must separate them. Keep in mind he will drive you crazy!! It would be an excellent time to schedule him for surgery for neutering during her last twelve days of her cycle. Hope this helps, Good Luck!!

When I first rescued my shepherd mix she immediately went into heat. It lasted about 2 1/2 weeks. Never want to deal with that again, had her spayed shortly afterwards.

your female will be in heat for about 3 weeks. till then you need to keep her in your sights, because if you don't watch her or keep her with you, all the male dogs will go crazy in your neighbor hood. if your border collie is not fixed then he will act all crazy till she comes out of her heat cycle, and also if he is not fixed then he will try to mount her till she comes out of heat. just waych her and she will be ok. i breed golden retrievers and i have the male and when i don't want to breed yet then i will take the female with me every where till she comes out of heat which lasts for about 3 weeks. good luck.
