well, i have an AAS in visual communications, and 1 year @ Arizona State University in photography. i can't help you with everything, but your f-stops control the depth in your picture. they also control how much light your camera takes in. for example: if you have a setting on f-4(it's been awhile,so if i'm rusty on the numbers, forgive me) you have a wider aperature opening, the camera takes in more light, but you have a flatter field of depth. if you have an f-16 setting you have a smaller aperature opening, camera takes in less light, but you have much greater depth. good luck. the others gave good answers too.
happy snapping!!

If you no longer have the manual that came with the camera, look on the website of the manufacturer. You can often download manuals from the company.
