this bar needs to fit in a door way and not interfer with the operation of the door. it is for a marine barracks where no hole can be drilled into the walls or door frame

Go to Sportmart or some sports chain. There's a chin up bar that allows you to use it by means of 2 choices:
1) alluminum cups that you screw into the door jam, then screw the bar into the cups, holding it into place.
2) Same thing, just don't use the alluminum cups. The bar has rubber stopper-things on each end, allowing you to screw it tightly in the doorway. But screw it in good, b/c depending on your weight, it may not stick for the whole set.

You can try suction cups on the ends like shower rods-but do not know what weight-how much weight it will handle but will not know unless you try.
