a sign language teacher told me that most people who use sign language have very vivid imaginations. when they perform sign language, they can draw pictures in their head when performing a certain hand gesture. for instance, when they would describe a certain location, they come up with ways to "short cut" an image of that location and do a certain hand gesture that pertains to that location or venue. they even use "pet names" or "short hand" using hand gestures to be assigned to a certain person so that they wouldn't have to spell out their name using the sign language alphabet.

if you're simply referring to using only the alphabet, i guess they do picture each letter in their head until the actual word is spelled out.

I would think they could read words and understand that certain signs MEAN those words-maybe they see images of the words they are thinking.
That is a very interesting question, though.

It depends. If they once had hearing, they hear in their heads. If not, I guess there are thousands of little hands moving around in their heads.

of course not! the sign language is the means to communicate.

do you see written words is your head when somebody talks to you?

That['s pretty stupid. They obviously think the same way we do. When we think we don't hear voices. And when someone says something you focus on the meaning not the transmission method.
