Laziness and the reliance on spellcheck. They believe it makes them sound more casual. It's a way to try to impose their personality through typing since they can't show it through a larger vocabulary.

Generally, it is a failure with two parts: the school system and the parents.
There was a time students were considered virtually illiterate unless they could read and write Latin. Schoolbooks from the 1800's and 1900's are filled with subjects even modern colleges do not teach. Nowadays, it is more important to soothe little egos than to engage little minds.
And parents .. oh boy. It seems that parents are more focused on money, prestige and image than on the well-being of their children. How much more attention is given to procuring the best mortgage rate than the best SAT scores? How much more money is directed to having a suitable image than having suitable tutors?
The children have television and video games for supervision, and virtually no structure OR they are structured right out of their little imaginations with play dates and social calendars.
Family time? Nope. There are au pairs, nannies and housekeepers for that. Chores? Are you kidding? The little tykes just had a manicure yesterday!
Heaven forbid a teacher should expect discipline in their classroom. Mercy! CPS will be called and the teacher fired for hurting the little one's delicate sensibilities. Never mind the fact the little one just punched another child or humiliated another until they cried in pain.
Sigh .. no one is accountable anymore. Responsibility is pawned off on someone else, and when the kids grow into young adults and seek companionship and a family unit within a gang, it's society's fault .. school's fault ... video games fault ...
and because the IQ levels have dropped so drastically, a new shorthand is becoming a cultural phenomena. Do u no wht I men? Even advertisers are buying into it. 'Tis a pity. There is a definite 'dumbing down' of this generation.

I was valedictorian of my high school class and a straight A student in college...and it took me FOREVER to learn how to spell definitely, haha. But I get what you're saying. What annoys me is "wud", "shoud", "waz", "wit", etc...but I'm going to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and say they are taking shortcuts to typing when they write words out like this....
But who knows? Spelling and grammar in schools these days seems to be of low importance. Does anyone else feel that the emphasis is soooo much stronger on math and science? I cannot even remember formal grammar past grade 4. I know we live in a technological society and much of our progress depends on skills in math and science, but without good literary skills how will we EVER tell people in an intelligent and understandable fashion of our discoveries? I think that grammar and spelling should have an equal emphasis in schools, along with the more mathematical fields.
And practically everything has a spell check function anyway....why don't we use it?

They don't spell correctly because they are too lazy to learn and probably do not have a job that requires a decent education.
A person can be a moron and still grow up to be an adult.

Some people simply didn't pay attention to the grammatical portions of their schoolwork. Or, due to unfortunate circumstances, they were unable to complete their education. Also, I have a friend who is highly intelligent, but is so profoundly dyslexic that he misspells nearly everything. I've done editing for him before. It could be something like that.

Because school in America suck, and sadly they are just getting worse. In my state they just withdrew a lot of money from school funding, money that is now going to be used to fund the war in Iraq. Might want to check and see if this is happening in your state to bankrupt our kids. I support our troops but they need to get the money for the war from somewhere else that won't hurt our future.

Somebody or something looks out for them, apparently. Kinda scary that these people will inevitably be driving on the roadways with us, huh? So much for Darwin's theory.

They spend their lives multitasking, which means that they don't pay appropriate attention to detail. They have poor teachers or parents, who don't emphasize the need for spelling. They have spell check, which corrects their errors. Or.. they simply aren't writing for an audience for whom spelling is important in order to convey their message.
