Hello.
DanE is correct, Amtrak does not go in to Las Vegas at this time. The names of the stations are: Los Angeles Union Station and Las Vegas Nevada Airport Bus Station (LAS).
Until 1997, the Amtrak Desert Wind train service ran through Las Vegas using the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) rails that run through the city; Amtrak service to Las Vegas has since been replaced by Amtrak's Thruway Motorcoach bus service. Plans to restore Los Angeles to Las Vegas Amtrak service using a Talgo train have been discussed since the Desert Wind was discontinued. As of 2006, however, no such service has been established. The bus ride is close to 6 hours from Los Angeles Union Station.
If you choose to fly instead, a direct flight is one hour and costs $188 on the following carriers: American Airlines, America West, Northwest, Alaska Airlines, US Airways and United.

DanE is correct. You would purchase the ticket from Amtrack and they'd put you on a Greyhound bus, or you can buy the ticket from Greyhound. It leaves Union Station in Los Angeles and will take you to the bus station in downtown Las Vegas right next to the Plaza Hotel and across from the Fremont Street Experience. If you're staying at a downtown hotel in Vegas it works perfect. Mostly senior citizens on the bus as I recall. I took that a few times and 5 hours and 45 mins sounds about right. I paid about $30 round trip for that ride, but that was a few years back. The upside of leaving Union Station is you can take the Red Line or other Metro rail to get to Union Station. Good luck.

You can't take a train to Las Vegas, but Amtrak can get you there via bus in 5 hours, 45 minutes from Los Angeles. You can pick up a timetable at any Amtrak station or request one by mail. Amtrak accepts all major credit cards and personal checks. You can purchase tickets aboard buses; however, an additional charge applies if the ticket office is open at your time of departure.

Fly, when I was in Vegas earlier this year - there were plenty of Budget Airlines flying in and out!
There is a railway station at Vegas, afterall thats why Vegas was founded - at the railway junction between 2 or 3 lines!
