MS is not free. You can go to www.bizrate.com and look for a good price. Sometimes you hit it right and get free shipping.
I would not download. It's better to have the CD in case you ever have the need to reinstall.

You could probably download a pirated copy and get viruses and spyware. Try OpenOffice. It's free and very good and opens all Microsoft Office documents.
