professional is always better, but it can be very costly. especially the maintenance - dont expect to pay once to get your hair done, and then start fixing your touch ups yourself, it won't work..
Go to a beauty supply store, and look at the colro charts there. the box stuff at the drugstore is actually more expensive, and will destroy your hair (since your going darker, you wont need a developer witha high bleach content. the boxes in the store come with a standard high, for people who want to lighten as well. sort of like a one-size-fits-all.). it will also look different the more you use it.
Try wellaUSA. they're my favorite, and I've been using it for years! It's just as easy as using a "box" product. goodluck!

I have been dying my hair for many years and have used
almost every kind of dye there is. I also have brown hair
and it is very easy to get a great color i like. Salons do a
great job, but they are very expensive, compared to what
you can do yourself. A Beauty Supply store is a smart way
to go, the girls there are very helpful and will show you
everything you will need, to include the color closest to the
one you want.
The only bad experience I have had thru my years, is with
Nice and Easy. This Dye would turn my hair a brown with a
green tint, not good. So needless to say, i don't use Nice and
Easy anymore. But i will use any of the other brands at
Department Stores.
Hope this helps you. Good Luck with the ART of Hair Coloring.

If you're just dyeing your hair to a darker brown, there's no need to go all expensive, you might try a Hydrience shade which contains no amonia and will not damage your hair, just keep in mind that if you have long or really thick hair, you'll probably need more than one box.
I'm a Nice&Easy "reddish blond" myself
Hope that helps

honestly, I would consider going to a salon to have it done. I have my hair colored at a salon, and the best brand of color she's used on me is redken. she used a brand that I can't remember the name of, the first time I had it colored, and I didn't like it, it made my hair feel like straw, and I didn't like the color either. she used the redken color the next time, and the color turned out to be exactly what it was supposed to be, and she's been using that on my hair ever since. we've changed the color up a little from time to time, but I've always gotten really good results with redken. and my hair has been silky soft every time.
they also have a lot of color swatches in the salon that you can look at and that can help you decide the color you want too.
Good luck to you.

I would DEFINATLEY agree with getting it done proffecionally. Although i've only died my hair once, it turned out horrible. I wanted a very light blond but it turned out almost red! I let my mom do it (mistake #1) and i used Herbal Essence (mistake #2)
i hoped I helped.

Hydrance by Loriel... And don't do it more that once every other month, or you'll hurt your hair.
