Being justified means being declared "not guilty". It would be good enough if God said that even though we were guilty we didn't have to suffer the penalty of our sins, but He is so good that He goes beyond that. He sees a person of faith as being "in Christ". When He looks at us He sees the righteousness of Jesus wrapped around us. That's why He says:

Psalms 103:8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 9 He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. 10 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. 13 As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him. 14 For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.

The notes in my Study Bible says

"The sins of God's people, punished symbolically in the animal sacrifices of the OT period, would be totally punished in the once-and-for-all sacrifice of Christ on the cross"

I guess it means that their salvation justifies their faith.

If you break the word justified apart, it means this:
"Just as if I'd never sinned."

It means that if you believe in Jesus, you can do absolutely anything and you will be forgiven for it. You could commit genocide.... but Jesus dying was apparently already enough to atone for anything you could ever do..... so thats alright and what you did is still justified.

The new testament wants you to revel in debauchery... basically. Its all forgiven. ^_^
