That is the famous riddle that the Sphinx asks in Greek mythology. The answer is Man: he crawls on 4 legs as a baby, walks on 2 legs as an adult, and uses a cane in old age.

A person. When's the person's a baby, it crawls on four legs (actually 2 arms and 2 legs) when's it's a child, teen, and adult, it walks on 2 legs, and when it's an elder, it walks on 2 legs, with a cane, which is the third leg. I've heard this MILLIONS of times.
It's not just a man. It can be a woman too.

A human being, either man or woman. Because first, as a child, a person couldn't possibly walk with weak legs as they are just about to develop. So, he/she will crawl on 2 legs and 2 arms supposedly called 4 legs. Then, as he/she gets older and learns to walk, he/she will walk on 2 legs. But, as he/she ages and his/her legs start to get weaker and can't support his/her body weight, that person most probably use a cane or stick to lean on as a back-up support. Thus, making he/she walk on 3 legs.

The answer is Man. First, as a baby you crawl on all fours. Then, as you grow you walk on two legs. Last, when you get old you walk with a cane.
