You have it all wrong... a "diet" isn't something you "do" until you're "done." Rather, you need a lifestyle change, where you exercise more and eat differently (not less, differently).

Either join a group like Weight Watchers, or find one of their members so you can learn how they eat. They will teach you how to eat so you're full, but with greatly reduced calories.

Second, join the Y, go out for a sport team, etc. You must exercise to be healthy.

You need to lose 1-2 pounds a week for healthy weight loss. To lose 1 pound a week, you need to either eat 500 fewer calories a day (substitute an apple for an older of fries, for instance) or burn 500 calories while exercising, or a combination that equals 500 in some way.

You might think about trying this book called "The Movie Star Diet" by Steve Simmons. It helped me lose thirty pounds in 2 1/2 months when I didn't think anything would work. My goal to begin with was only 20 lbs! It has a really easy plan to follow and an excellent workout as well.

Eat less, exercise more.

Eat in moderation with no refined sugars at all. Exercise at least 30 minutes every day. This can be almost any form of activity - raking leaves, riding a bike, walking, running, a treadmill, swimming, playing tennis or racquetball. The point is to get out and get moving. And you should be working at least hard enough so that it's difficult to carry on a conversation because you need to pause to breathe after every few words.

Diets are okay and everything, but they can decrease your metabolism, causing your body to conserve fat. What you really need is some long, slow aerobic exercise. Go for at least 12-15 minutes or more per day, and don't stop doing this once you get rid of the weight you want to get rid of.
I recommend the book "Fit or Fat" by Covert Bailey

Don't fall for fad diets. Typically, they are temporary, and detrimental to your long term health. The best way to loose weight is to eat balanced, healthy meals and exercise regularly. Try cutting out refined sugars, processed and artificial foods, and simple carbohydrates. This is a sample of what I would recommend for someone trying to get in shape: Breakfast- whole grain cereal and that is low in sugar with skim milk or hot oat bran with honey for taste; an apple or orange; and yogurt for protein Lunch: A tuna, turkey, or vegetable sandwich on whole grain or sprouted bread with water to drink Dinner: Lentils, quinoa, or black beans and brown rice; again stick with water to drink. Good snacks are raw veggies, dried fruits, and cheese and crackers (NOT American cheese). Make sure to add in at least 20-30 minutes of exercise a day and you will loose weight and feel awesome. Good Luck!
