Have you been to a UK prison? Don't believe the hype about 5 star holiday camps. If you want any sort of family life a criminal career would destroy it. With frequent separations, food that is very different to home cooking, sharing with another guy... do you want me to go on?
If you want to be a lonely impoverished old man/woman maybe but otherwise not a good choice.

Rational yes, for those with low qualifications and therefore little chance of success by normal routes - but not because of weak sentencing, which is on a rising scale and prevents your criminal business growing while you are out of the market. For those mentioned above, entering crime as a self-employed criminal has as good a chance of making decent money as anything. The laws of economics clearly apply and you will be in an extreme capitalist situation (literally cutthroat!) where the dangers are commensurate with potential rewards. Most drug dealers live at home with parents or on the dole, in the hope of hitting the bigtime - like any other small business, or like a kid who plays Sunday League in the vague hope of ending in the Premiership. Few do, but they all dream... Most spheres of enterprise are securely sewn up by the incumbents for their own benefit and crime is the least securely closed. The only equivalent opportunity for most is to predict the next big thing and get in early (such as the mobile phone boom), but this is less easy to do.

depends on your definition of light sentences, I saw a guy get 8 weeks inside for a drink drive first offence.
That's a hell of a long eight weeks to that guy.
The media always hype that somebody only got 5 years..... 5 years is a long time to be cooped up. Think what you are expecting to do in the next 5 years, all the bands that come and go, all the festivals, holidays abroad, nights out with mates, nights in with girls, tasty meals... puts it in a bit more perspective maybe?
We're not here on earth for long, gotta make the most of it.

if its first offence then yes u get a light sentence but when u repeat an offence of the same nature it becomes an heavy sentence, its not the way to go man if u got a brain n a pair of arms use it to do something more worth while! bein locked up for 23 hours a day will make u go nuts!! remember if u still have family out side of prison take their feelings into consideration they may show none but when u are inside its them who hurt most

I'm reviewing the situation
If you want to eat, you've got to earn a bob
Is it such a humiliation
For a robber to perform an honest job
So a job I'm getting, possibly
I wonder who the boss'll be?
I wonder if he'll take to me?
What bonuses he'll make to me?
I'll start at eight and finish late
At normal rate, and all, but wait
I think I'd better think it out again
From Oliver! (1968)
Yes, I think Mr Fagin had the right idea!

If you live in the US and pay taxes on the money you make from crime in the UK that would be a great idea but still immoral.
