Start out light, because you have to do reps (repetitions). These reps along with the weights are what allow you to "feel the burn" which is what you are looking for. As soon as you can do 3 sets of 12 reps easily then it's time to increase your weights. Please make sure that you are consulting a personal trainer to show you proper form and technique so as not to injure yourself.

When starting lifting your form is the most important thing. You should pick a weight that you can very comfortably do 10 to 15 reps with, while being sure you are performing the exercise correctly so you do not injure yourself when you use heavier weights.

Safety is the main issue. The general rule is to start with a weight you can comfortably lift ten times.

Trial and error, really. You need to find a weight that you can comfortably lift and do 10 lifts without straining. Then you gradually build up from there.
