Could be a phase, but does he/she still go to bed at the same time? If you have changed anything in his/her schedule it will effect his/her sleeping pattern.

My son went through this phase for almost his whole 2nd year of life. Now that he's going to be 3 next month, he's starting to sleep until about 7 or 7:30am

kids go through phases of how much sleep they need depending on their growth needs.
My nephew goes through times where he sleeps from 9-7, then for a week or so he sleeps 10-5...it just depends on their needs (which change ALL the time)

My 18 month old daughter does this too. We finally figured out that she was hungry. We either give her a glass of milk or Instant Breakfast to fill her up. Then tell her to go back to sleep. She only sleeps for a couple hours longer...but it sure helps me out.

You didn't say whether he still naps. My guess is that he does. Maybe he is requiring less sleep. There is a great book, "Solving Your Child's Sleep Problems." I would highly recommend it.
From my own perspective, without asking questions, I would guess that you would want to shorten nap, or perhaps start by gradually changing his bedtime to a bit later until he is waking at the time you wish him to be awakened.
