Good question. I suggest something biodegradeable like jute or cotton or copra. These materials have the additional advantage of being produced by poor countries, so you're helping their economies. Here in NZ a chain of stores called the Bin Inn have an excellent idea; they give you a cloth bag with their logo on it. Plastic bags are a stupid idea. Supermarkets should be required to charge for them.

in europe they charge extra for the bags, so people bring their own cloth bags, usually they are more eco educated over there, here in the states you can get paper, and if you bring your own bags you get a couple cents credit, so basically people do it for the environment.
