lol. unsure... but after a long session of barking for my pup, he kept coughing, so I knew he irritated his throat. Unfortunately, dogs don't learn that way I guess cause he still has marathon barking sessions. :)

I think that a dog barking, yelping, howling all day would be similar to us talking, talking loudly, yelling, and sometimes screaming daily. And it would only be with taking the amount of vocalization to the limits that we or the dog would get hoarse and suffer from sore vocal cords. And they, as we, would recover fairly quickly..Just my theory.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/q7CMV

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

They can loose their bark.
We went on vacation last year and left our Staffie at a boarding kennel. We were gone for a month. When we picked him up he had no bark. He'd barked a lot while we were gone and completely lost his voice. He recovered it within a week but it was so funny when he had no bark, he'd try but just a wheezey ,raspy sound would come out. Poor pooch.
He's forgiven us now.

I never really thought of that. Good question.

I had a dog who used to howl to certain music she would hear on the TV, and it took years before she finally wasn't able to do it anymore. She still tried, but she just couldn't hit some of her usual notes :-)

Like the answer before mine, they can, however it is rare. Though I only worked at a vet's, I can't think of the name, but dog's actually have a type f membrane which is constantly lubricating their vocal cords.
