Well, because basically in the beginning of earth's creation God created Adam and then made Eve to be his companion. They were to become "fruitful" and "fill the earth with children". Despite the fact that they were made perfect, God gave them a commandment to follow and testing their loyalty and obedience, God told Adam and Eve not to eat fruit from the "tree of the knowledge of good and bad" or else they would grow old and die. Of course, they made the decision to eat the fruit and they did grow old and die. However, because they were the first on earth and we are the inheritance of them, their sin against God passed on to their offspring and passed on to their children. That's the reason why we all grow old, get sick, and die. Romans 5:12 says: " That is why, just as through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because they had all sinned". That is why Adam and Eve are mentioned in the Bible and in religion, because of their actions we all suffer and die. Many people wonder why we grow old and die? Why so much suffering? Where did sin start? Who were the first humans on earth? All this is mentioned in the Bible and that's where you can turn to get answers? I hope this helps you.

Not a whole lot. Religion covers a lot of territory. Christianity on the other hand has a great deal to do with them. All roads lead to Christ. Even the Creation of the Old Testament when God Almighty created everything.

Everything.
Every day I see questions like "How can a loving GOD allow this or that or this" The answer is in Genesis chapter three. It's all about the knowledge of good and evil. Ignorance was bliss but we wanted knowledge. You see the end results of that knowledge on this silly Yahoo forum every day. Yukkers!
May GOD richly bless you

Adam and Eve are central to the Judeo-Christian creation myth, so these play a key role in those two religions.
but they are irrelevant to most religions.

'religon' (sic) has everything to do with these two invented characters. As they don't exist, or rather never did, it was the man-made religion that invented them.
