Hi all

I'd like to get a set of five paintbrushes for interior decorating. I don't want to break the bank, but would like something that is of reasonable quality to give me a good finish, and that is worth looking after and keeping for a while

Can anyone suggest a brand that is worth looking at?

Thanks
Matt

Brand is not important. The quality is. Look at this link for more info

I use Purdy exclusively, for a few reasons.

After applying thousands of gallons of paint, I realize that even cheap, throw away brushes "might" do the job, but I've had some PURDYS for 10 plus years, and they still function admirably.

It's not an issue here that you'll get right or wrong answers strictly, juts personal preferences,,, LIKE COLOR CHOICES,,,soooooooo many ask about,,,sigh.

I have to confess something however.

One of my favorite brushes is a 2 inch sash brush, old now, but still servicable... LINZER.

Often inexpensive, old company, decent product, widely available, and every time I've ever sent them a comment, they send me a brush,,,smiles.

Rev. Steven

Keep in mind the purpose of the service, and care of the tool. Even a decent, inexpensive brush can last you awhile. Also care in selection should regard the intended use,,,and most decent brushes state what they are OK for.

I agree that Purdy is a great brush but let me tell you of something I recently discovered. While in a local discount store (the name where I live is BIG LOTS) I stumbled onto some Shur-Line brushes. I bought a medium and a large size. The medium is perfect for trim work and the large works well for large jobs. The price I paid was under $3.00 ea. Lowes or Home Depot sell the identical brushes for $8-$15 ea.

My husband is a housepainter and he only uses Purdy brushes. You can find them on sale - sometimes - at any Sherwin-Williams paint store, and they ARE worth it.

The most important thing to remember is - take care of them and they will last you. You HAVE TO clean them promptly after using them, and I mean REALLY clean them thoroughly. The thing that kills brushes the fastest is not cleaning them promptly and thoroughly - especially the paint that works its way up to the "heel" (handle) of the brush after you've been painting for awhile (usually because you put too much paint on the brush and didn't tap it off often enough). If you don't get that stubborn paint build-up out of the brush (my husband uses a special wire brush tool for this), the residual paint will harden (like concrete) and eventually leave you with nothing but stubble to paint with.

Paint brushes are like any other tool - preventative maintenance is key to getting a tool to work for you for a long time. It IS worth the investment of time and money, in the long run.

I was going to say I use Purdy like the first answer. I use the angled brush for cutting in and I really like it. I have tried many others but the Purdy's seem to withstand more wear.

Most professional painters use a brand called Purdy. It is by far my favorite brush manufacturer. Recently, they have been bought-out by Sherwin-Williams, so you can get either original Purdy, or brushes marked with the S-W brand name.

Purdy is the best I've ever used. A bit more pricey than other brands but in the long run they pay for their self.
