gerbil grits, or like the little wood chips that can be bought at home depot in a huge bag for a bulk price, because they don't usually stick to a cat's feet, and it's still dense, but you may have to change it more because the wood is porous for urine and excremement. If not, your local grocery store should have store name-generic materials that cost a few bucks less than litter!

In all my years I've never found an alternative or additive to a good cat litter. That cheap Walmart trick sounds great! Sand (from the beach) is not sterile & can contain dangerous chemicals & parasites. Same thing with garden soil. I would use any of those other suggestions in an emergency they're good ideas The thing about cat litters is that they are specially made for that particular job so they work. The secret is maintenance. If you sift the litter box once or twice a day the litter lasts much longer. I use the baking soda trick too (I use what I call 'flavored' BS... those made for sprinkling on your carpet @ the 99 cent store) I also use a safe disinfectant on the bottom between washings to kill bacteria. But you sure are right...litter can be costly...especially with more than one cat!.

Cedar chips will absorb the odor (newspaper and sand will not), and will be less messy (sand gets everywhere, newspaper print rubs off on paws). Feline Pine is also a good cheap cat litter if you can find it.

Newspaper?

Litter is so expensive these days. I find the Walmart brand in the big green box is the best for the price. It's about $5 something and lasts about a month.

I have tried wood chips and newspaper, but to help the smell nothing works as good as litter. Try to find a cheaper brand.

Sand or clay from the hardware store; shredded newspaper. You might be able to get shreds by the bag full from local businesses who regularly shred their paper.

I have used plain old dirt...depends on if you live in the city and dont have a yard. if you do dirt works fine and you can put it on bald spots when used up and the grass grows back beautifully.
