I dropped out of 2 1/2 years at Baylor university where i was pursuing a business degree, While i love business..and got calculus/economics all of the hard material out of the way...i looked at the lifestyle, and to me working a desk job for ten years before i could open my own business/ideas etc wasn't a stress i was looking forward to.

I've done some thinking about life and just want a change, and to me flying...allows you to also pursue business/stocks etc so i'm not going to throw out my dreams etheir. Point being with no money, And wanting to avoid the military at least right now, anyone know of any reputable flight schools in florida, or anywhere?

Thanks alot

Aaron,

The first thing I will ask is what type of flying experience do you have (if any)? Lots of people enjoy flying as a passenger, but sitting at the controls of an aircraft is something that (in my opinion) must be a passion if you are to be successful at it.

If you haven't done much flying, I would recommend taking an intro flight with a local flight school/FBO. Besides catching a glimpse into what it is like to be a pilot, you can ask the instructor pilot all the questions you like about the profession. A good place to find a local facility is http://www.beapilot.com.

Next, you must realize that becoming a pilot is NOT cheap! On average, you can expect to spend in the neighborhood of $40,000 just to get you through your commercial license with instrument/multi-engine ratings, and possible your flight instructor certificate (CFI). At this point, you'll probably have somewhere around 400 hours.

Keep in mind that even with the above, you will not be qualified to fly for the airlines. You'll have to work as an instrutor, aerial photographer, tow gliders, etc. to build flight time. Once you have more than 500 hours total time and 100 multi-engine logged you can start looking for work in a charter program, or something similar. This, of course, depends on the job market at the time. If the market happens to be bad when you reach this point...you could have to have substantially more time logged.

When you reach 1500 hours (with specific requirements for multi/cross country/pilot-in-command) you can test for your Air Transport License. At the 2000-2500 hour mark, you'll usually be considered employable by the airlines and the jobs start looking for you instead of the other way around.

Basically, you can expect to spend 10 years working towards the Captain's chair in an airliner. AND you must have at least a Bachelor's, unless you're looking to fly corporate, fractional, or something along those lines...in which case you might get away with having only an Associate.

There are dozens upon dozens of schools around the country that offer flight training programs. It really depends on what route you choose to take. You can enter a flight academy that pushes you through the training I mentioned above in about a year. There are others that allow you to progress at your leisure (and as your finances allow). Another option, and the one I would recommend, is a 4-year university with an aviation program. All of these programs will be comparable in price. The link I mentioned above will also provide you with info on finding one that fits you.

Please don't mistake my comments for negativity. I just want you to have an idea of what you are getting into. Flying is expensive, involves constant training, and can be stressful...just like any other profession. In my opinion, though, the rewards are undoubtedly worth it!!

Blue skies. See you up there!

Well, you should not have droped out of college. You need a degree to become hired as an airline pilot -- they don't care what it is so long as you have a degree.

And being broke dosent help the situeation either.. its going to cost over $50,000 just to get all of your ratings that you need to be hired as a pilot, and you will need to spend even more than that just to log enough flight hours to be hired by an airline.

Also, if you join the air force without any flying experience, then you probably will not have a flying position in the airforce. You will need to do something else that dosent really have anything to do with aviation.

Huffman Aviation is one. But all of them are good, just get out the Yellow pages & look up Flight Training, & locate a flying school atan airport nearest you. If you have your sights set on the airlines, then re-think the military, it's the fastest track to a Captains seat in the airlines.

Sounds like you could do this.We just flew on Delta and it was an adventure. My daughter got a Delta card handed to her from the pilot after we landed.Do it!! Florida probably has some schools, but I am sure you would do great with a mentor.Ask around for the right directions,no pun intended!

One of the best websites for new pilots is Rod Machados. Avoid the military - they dont crank out near as many pilots as they used to, and they will want about 10 years of your life - or your life itself.
