I have an autistic child and if I ever found out that a "center "was using that method to potty train my child I would bring a lawsuit so fast every ones head would spin. that is outrageous! what you need to do is find his motivator something he loves w/ my daughter in was bubbles every time she goes in the potty she gets to blow bubbles. there are several other approaches and a book called Toilet Training an Autistic Child .please do not lock the child in a bathroom w/ no clothes on. and just as a parent exactly how is that helping a child to socialize and learn? you have to engage these kids not isolate them more that they already are.sorry but that just really upset me . good luck and keep trying it takes a lot of patience.

This method is going to sound absolutely awful, so please don't hold me accountable. I have a friend who is a speech language pathologist who has worked with autistic children for about 15 years. She told me how the clinic she works at suggests to potty train an autistic child. Remove their clothes and shut them in the bathroom with no toys. If they use the potty, give them one toy but leave them in the bathroom. If they have an accident, take away the toy. If they use the potty again, they get another toy. If they use it again, they get a third toy. When they use the potty 4 times in a row with no accidents, they can get dressed and come out. If they have an accident, start the whole process over again. My friend swears that most autistic children are potty trained within 2 days.
Yes, this sounds harsh to me too, but I have no experience with autistic children so I'm not a good judge. I'll leave it up to you to decide if this sounds like a reasonable solution based on your own experience.

I have a four year old autistic boy and I CAN'T WAIT to find your answer, so please let me know when you find one. One thing I suggest that has worked for my son for other things is to have a stip of pictures that show each tiny step and you go over it and over it. For instance, pull down pants, lift lid, etc. And reward with something he loves. Autistic kids LOVE routine and the pics do this for them. Worked will for my son to wash his hands (though the credit goes to his teachers for making and using the strip in the first place). Google or ebay for PECS to get little pictures or make your own, most are simple line drawings. Good luck.
